100 YEAR HOTEL
Celebrate the 100-year anniversary of ‘t Poorthuys with us. For almost a century, the hotel has welcomed guests from home and abroad and had housed many special memories in its walls. From the first guests who stepped inside in 1926 to the modern traveler of today, ‘t Poorthuys has always offered a place where comfort, freedom and tradition go hand in hand. We look back with pleasure on a rich history and would like to thank all our guests for their trust and support. On to the next 100 years!

1926-1947 Pension Gast
From 1926 Gerard Jacobus Gast runs a boarding house in the building at Koepoortstraat 10, Middelburg. Gast is registered at the address in 1940 as a boarding house owner and he remains in the business until 1947 - in that year Royaal opens in the building.
1947-1982 Hotel Royaal
1947-1949
On January 15, 1947, D. Wielemaker opens hotel-restaurant Royaal. Two years later, Wielemaker leaves and the building is sold by tender.
1949-1982
Jilles Marinus Ludekuse buys the building and continues the hotel under the same name. When he dies on 15 November 1961, his wife B.A Ludekuse-Blok continues the business until 1982.
1982-1989 Hotel Roelant
On Friday 2nd of April 1982, Berend Huizing opens hotel-pension (annex gallery) Roelant. Huizing is declared bankrupt in November 1985, but his bankruptcy is declared null and continued the business a month later.
1989-2021 Hotel Auberge Provençal
In 1989, Frans d'Huy took over Roelant from Huizing and converted the cellar into a bistro-bodega called De Wijnschenkerij or Het Keldertje.
Somewhere in the early 21st century, d'Huy remodeled the Roelant hotel and named his new business Auberge Provençal, with a restaurant in the basement of the building. Frans d’Huy closed his business in 2012.
2013-2020 B&B 'T Poorthuys
In 2013, Mayor Harald Bergmann opened the building at Koepoortstraat 10, which had been converted into a Bed & Breakfast by Peter Blom and Simon Appleyard.
